The design of the actuator is intended to be mounted forwards, although
most manufacturers mount them backwards so that they push the deck
upwards.
High quality treadmill rollers have a steel finish and bearings that are
pressed and sealed into each end with carbon steel wall construction.
Rubber sleeves on both rollers will enable longer wear on the belt, deck
and roller bearings, as they will not need tightening very often.
The standard treadmill belt is composed of PVC (poly vinyl chloride).
The belt is high quality and will service well for years. It has low
friction, which makes for a quieter operation. Some treadbelts are even
offered in non-slip treads so that dirt does not get into the belt
grooves. If a belt has a splice which is straight across, there will be
excess noise as the belt crosses over the rollers on each end. Some
belts have pre-lubrication with silicon so that it is not necessary to
lubricate it when delivered.
The nylon fibers contained on some belts have high tensile strength
(high strength steel alloy), which makes it much stronger than cotton
belts. It allows for plentiful elasticity so that it resists impact, and
less ply separation and better adhesion. It is also resistant to water,
acid and alkali. As a result of these features, less effort will be
placed on the motor.
Some high quality decks have a one inch thick pressboard which is
composed of particulate and high fibered wood. It will also contain a
good coating and laminate.
You can clean the top of your deck with a glass cleaner or other light
cleaner. Never use bleach or other chloride based cleaners.
In order to clean the underneath portion of the belt, loosen the rear
roller and wipe the deck and back of the belt with a clean towel. Do not
use cleaners. Then apply new deck lubricant and adjust it if necessary.
In order to create a smooth change in speed, an optical speed sensor is
used with a PWM motor controller. The optical eye will count the turns
of the motor at the location of the axle; then the PWM motor controller
averages the input count from the optical eye in order to have a
consistent speed no matter the load.
